Gay Getaway – The South Pacific Is Calling You
The south pacific is an area with strong conservative view points. The islands are small and the church is still a major component in most of their national cultures. For this reason the pacific islanders have a reputation for not being gay travel friendly destinations. But this changing and demand is increasing. Some of it is economically driven with tourist boards recognising the gay travel dollar is good for their coffers.
The cruise ship option is often a good choice for the gay traveller. Targeted gay and lesbian cruises are offered by many of the cruise lines. The cruise ship market understood early the need to provide services to the pink market and they have been offering gay cruise timetables for a number of years. Cruising from island to island is a wonderful way to taste island cultures.
Vanuatu has developed a number of resorts over the last five years that while they are not gay specific, they are private and welcome pink travellers. One area Vanuatu has promoted to same sex couples is devotion ceremonies, which are non-legally binding, but are romantic celebrations.
Tahiti in French Polynesia has not been a particularly active in marketing itself to the gay traveller. However recognising they were losing out on the gay tourist dollar they hosted a rainbow parade for the first time in 2009.
Of the other Pacific islands perhaps the most gay friendly are the islands of Samoa and American Samoa. While these islands remain staunchly conservative about most areas of life they are more accepting of homosexuality than other islands in the Pacific. Much of this can be traced back to the traditional practice of Fa’afafine, transgender living accepted as a normal choice.
While the pacific islands may seem a bit daunting for the gay traveller there are a number of viable options available. The islanders themselves are kind and generous people, the beaches unspoilt, and life is relaxed – ideal components for an enjoyable and successful gay vacation in the pacific islands.
